Before starting the challenge, there are a few things you need to know!

  • • Ages 13–17: Additional activities will be added in coming months for you, but you can still participate now!

2 ways to participate in the Challenge

1. Individual or small group

You can complete the challenge on your own, with a grown up, or a group of friends.

If you don’t have a stable internet connection, you can download our Workshop Resource Pack, do the Challenge offline, and mail-in your submission!

Steps to participate online

  • 1. Click "START" link at the top of this screen, and follow the step-by-step instructions on each page of that section.

    OPTIONAL: You can choose to keep exploring by completing the activities in the “Take it further” section of each page. This section includes bonus Scratch coding projects, games, and reflection questions, but they aren’t necessary to complete the challenge. You can always come back and try them later!

  • 2. Input your plastic-use data and describe your solution to reduce plastic waste.
  • 3. Complete the short quiz to test your new plastic and data science knowledge.
  • 4. Click the “Submit” link at the top of the screen when you’ve finished the Challenge and enter all of your information - this is where you’ll need help from a grown up if you’re under 16 years old!
  • 5. Click the “Impact” link at the top of the page to see where the other students who have taken the #kids2030 Challenge are from and the total amount of plastic that will be reduced by everyone who took the Challenge!
  • 6. Check your email inbox to get your certificate.
  • 7. Congrats — you completed the #kids2030 Challenge!

Steps to participate offline

  • 1. Download our Workshop Resource Pack.

  • 2. Print all of the documents, or open up a PDF editor to fill them out on your computer.
  • 3. Read through the Lesson Plan, and use it to guide you through the activity.
  • 4. Fill out all of the worksheets provided.
  • 5. Optional: use the Scratch guides provided to remix our Scratchs project
  • 6. Fill out the Mail-in submission form.
  • 7. And follow the Mail-in Submission instructions provided below under the 2 ways to submit your data and solution section.
2. Big group

If you’re an educator or community leader, you can run a workshop version of the Challenge with a big group of young people.

If you don’t have a stable internet connection, you can download our Workshop Resource Pack, do the Challenge offline, and mail-in your submission!

Steps to participate

  • 1. Download our ready-to-go Workshop Resource Package below
  • 2. Use the package to lead the group through the Challenge, either virtually or in-person (as long as it’s safe!)
  • 3. Have the group input their data and solution right into this website or you can provide them with the spreadsheet and worksheet files included in the Workshop Resource Pack (this is a great option if your internet isn’t super strong!)

    *When submitting one single entry as a group, you should enter the whole group’s combined data amounts and solutions together. You will enter the number of participants in the group in the final submission form.

  • 4. Run the workshop over one or two 1-hour sessions — time to complete the Challenge may vary.
  • 5. Help the group submit their projects (see “2 ways to submit” section below).
  • 6. If you have a stable internet connection, show the group the “Impact” page so they can see where everyone who has taken the Challenge is from and the total amount of plastic everyone’s solutions have saved.
  • 7. After entries are submitted, choose the option to provide your email to receive the printable participation certificate by email. You can then print them out or email them to the young people or their grown ups directly. Be sure to congratulate them on finishing the #kids2030 Challenge!

2 ways to submit your data and solution

1. Online submission

How to submit online

  • 1. Click the “Submit” link at the top of the screen once you’ve finished all of the required activities in “The Challenge” section of this website.
  • 2. Call a grown up over to help you fill out the questions.
  • 3. Write a description of your solution.
  • 4. Attach a photo of your solution, only if you drew or designed something.
  • 5. Input the plastic—use data from before and after your solution.
  • 6. Let us know where you’re submitting from—this will contribute Global and Canadian impact!
  • 7. Yay — you’re done!
2. Mail-in submission

How to mail-in your submission

  • 1. Download the group Workshop Resource Package (see above).
  • 2. Print out all of the files and complete all of the activities.
  • 3. Using the ‘Mail-In Submission Form’, follow the instructions to make sure you include everything we need from you — you can call a grown up over to help you fill out these questions.
  • 4. Put all of the papers into an envelope. Make sure you include:

    • • Mail-In Submission Form
    • • OPTIONAL: If you drew your solution on paper, you can include this too!
  • 5. Address the envelope to:
