What is the #kids2030 Challenge?

Kids Code Jeunesse is challenging YOU to take a look at the world, and take action to make it better.

Have you heard? In 2015, all of the countries in the United Nations set 17 Goals to build a better world by 2030 — they’re called the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs for short. That’s also why we’ve called this the #kids2030 Challenge.

We’ve got 10 years left and we all have a part to play to move towards these goals and create a better future — for everyone.

If we’re going to solve the biggest issues facing our Earth, we need everyone to help out, including you! We’re challenging you to take part in creating a better planet for yourself and kids of the future.

Each year, KCJ will set a new challenge with a different SDG theme, while getting you to explore how digital skills, AI and data, ethics, and technology can help solve the world’s most pressing issues.

Introducing this year’s Challenge:

Preventing plastic pollution!

Welcome to the first annual #kids2030 Challenge!

Here’s what you will do:

1. Collect data on the plastic products in your home, school or community.
2. Inspect where this plastic goes, and how it builds up over time. We’re going to show you how to visualize this information using data, storytelling, and code, AKA data science.
3. Take Action! Now you’ve seen the impact that plastic has on the environment, what can you do to reduce it? How can you inspire others to prevent plastic pollution?

Of course we must remember not all plastic is bad! Some plastics are better than others — like drinking from a reusable water bottle every day, instead of a disposable bottle you’ll only use once.

What are the SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals (or SDGs for short) came into force on January 1, 2016, after all of the members of the United Nations agreed on them. They include 17 goals, which are all designed to take care of the planet and improve the lives of the people on it - leaving no one behind.

In this challenge, you’ll focus on #12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This Goal is all about using our planet’s resources in a safe and sustainable way that benefits everyone — from humans, to animals, to the planet we call home.
