Global

There’s more to the plastic story

than meets the eye.

How far does the impact of plastic ripple through our world?

So far on this journey, you’ve looked at how your personal actions and habits can create plastic waste - and how mismanagement of that waste can create pollution. But what about our collective impact?

You might remember that this challenge is all about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They can be used to inspire global action on a whole range of issues that our planet and its inhabitants face. The SDGs aren’t separate items on a checklist that you slowly fill out - we need to look at how they connect and depend on each other.

You know that plastic consumption and production is hurting the climate and life on land and in water. You’ve realized that education can help us work together to achieve the goals

But have you considered how plastic pollution affects clean water, food, people’s jobs and our cities and communities?

Quick Facts!

These were known as the Millenium Development Goals, and they successfully reduced extreme poverty, increased access to education, reduced child mortality and many more achievements!1

You’ve completed this step of the challenge - great job!

You’ve learned about the SDGs and how they help us to build a better world for everyone. You can now move on to the Solution section to invent your own solution.

Use this image of all 17 SDGs to reflect on these questions:

General

If we achieve all of the goals, what do you think life would be like in the year 2030? What about in the year 2050?

Community

Had you heard of the SDGs before today? Can you come up with different ways to help more students in your school or community to learn about these goals?

If you were in charge of your community, which goals would you want to focus on first? Why?

Ethical

Some countries may not have enough resources to meet these goals. Others may have more resources, but have also contributed to the problems the goals aim to solve. Should certain countries take on more responsibility for achieving the goals? How can countries lend each other a helping hand?
